That’s right! One of the castles used as a set for the Game of Thrones series is now for sale, with offers starting at £500,000. The place is Gosford Castle, one of the many castles used as a set for the Emmy winning show. Located on Mullaghbrack Road in Markethill, Northern Ireland, the 15-plus bedroom, 10 bathroom estate was previously used as a hotel and, recently, it served as a movie set. You might recognize it as the Riverrun Castle, the home of House Tully and, therefore, the ancestral home of Catelyn Stark and the birthplace of Robb Stark!
In real life, Gosford Castle has a little more simple story! It was built in the mid-1800s by Archibald Acheson, the 2nd Earl of Gosford. According to the listing, the exquisite castle was designed by London architect Thomas Hopper and occupied by successive Earls of Gosford up until 1921.
During WWII, the castle was used to accommodate troops and keep prisoners of war. It was then sold to the Ministry of Agriculture and turned into a park, then used again as a military camp, before being transformed into a rustic hotel in 1983.
The castle has been in a process of restoration and development since 2006, with a view to transform it into 23 luxury residences. While only a portion of the castle is for sale, it is expected buyers could transform the section available into a set of luxury apartments or even a hotel.
Even though the possibilities for this property are vast, we can’t imagine any buyer would want to be moving in straight away. Looking at the photos of the interior, you can see it has a rustic appeal, although there’s one major drawback. According to the listing, there’s no heating – but it’s the perfect opportunity to joke that “winter is coming”. You can check out the space at maisonni.com.
