Last February, Ikea, the famous Swedish brand, presented its collaboration with Tom Dixon, one of the most important designers and industrial design connoisseurs of this generation.

This stunning collaboration resulted in a piece called Delaktig, an open-source platform that incorporates a bed and allows its owners to add a lamp, swap the backrest around, add an armrest or change its cover completely. Join Best Interior Designers to learn more.

“The more people that get involved in Delaktig – the better. I think that’s how a modern business should work”, says Tom Dixon, who wanted to open up for co-creation in every sense. In fact, Delaktig, the Swedish word for “involvement”, is largely about collaboration.

A collaboration between the designer and the brand, but also with the buyer of the item, who always participates in the display and use of the piece. At its most basic, Delaktig is a single bed which can be rapidly transformed into a chaise lounge or a three-seat sofa by adding additional components.

IKEA and Tom wanted to know what new ways of living meant for upholstered furniture. Produced in an industrial manner, Delaktig challenges the conventional production of sofas today. Available in three sizes, owners can choose to customize their platform based on their mood. Basically, do their thing.

Tom Dixon also collaborated with Bemz, who specializes in soft hacks, to produce four luxe covers that elevate the IKEA frame into a luxury unit, from sleek black wool to shower-proof stripes, and even a one-off Icelandic sheepskin mono-cover known as ‘The Beast’.

Amongst the add-ons, one can find a heavy-weight Boucle throw – that can be used to transform the entire unit into an electric blue mass -, heavy-weight task lamps, coffee tables and magazine racks that can be clamped, slotted or bolted to mutate the sofa into a work or entertainment space. Made of substantial and durable aluminum plate, this piece is robust enough to last a lifetime.
