Jorge Cañete | Exclusive Interview

Jorge Cañete | Exclusive Interview – It was no accident that Jorge Cañete, a Swiss of Catalan and Andalusian origin, chose to devote his life to interior architecture and design. After a career in luxury products (with Ungaro, Bvlgari, Mugler et Azzaro), which honed his sense for beautiful objects, and completion of an MBA in Lausanne, he opted to express his creativity in three-dimensional form through work in interior design. He gained his diploma in Interior Design from London Metropolitan University. Thereafter, a series of projects in the offices of architects in Rome and in Geneva served as a springboard and impetus for him to found his own design studio in Switzerland, more than 15 years ago.

Jorge Cañete’s working method involves very careful analysis of each parameter – the environment in which the project is set, the feeling inherent in the location, and, of course, the client’s own personality. By combining these three sources of inspiration he is able each time to come up with a project that accurately fulfills the requirements of his very demanding clientele, who seek an emotional yet at the same time practical inner substance.

In 2014, he was awarded Best International Designer of the Year by ANDREW MARTIN, known as “the Oscars of the Interior Design world”. Featured for 12 years in a row in the book “Interior Design Review, the definitive guide to the world’s Top 100 designers” by Andrew Martin. Saying that it is an honor to have Jorge Cañete in an Exclusive Interview for Best Interior Designers.

CAREER

Best Interior Designers: How did you get involved in the interior design Industry?

Jorge Cañete: Previously I used to work for luxury brands and had the chance to often change countries and apartments… I noticed that more than the new job opportunity abroad what was more important was to redesign my new home… So I decided to dedicate myself to that as it was what I really enjoyed.

Best Interior Designers: How would you describe your work style? Do you have any kind of signatures that help to identify your projects?

Jorge Cañete: My projects are Always narrative and poetic. Each project tells a story, evokes memories or interprets a dream, creating sensations, awakens feelings, offering new and unexpected perceptions.

Jorge Cañete: Sure! Each Project is a new encounter, a new story to narrate, and new people to meet… Never the same, but always emotional.

Best Interior Designers: What is your philosophy on design and life?

Jorge Cañete:  Never invent or pretend to know what is right. All my concepts are the results of the analysis of 3 sources of inspiration: the environment, the location, and obviously the emotions of my clients.

INSPIRATION

Best Interior Designers: Keeping up to date on all the trends is essential for anyone who wants to conquer this market. In what ways do you keep current with new trends?

Jorge Cañete: I do not care about trends. Trends go out of fashion. I work with the values and emotions of my clients. Those are timeless…

Best Interior Designers: How would you describe your personal decorating style?

Jorge Cañete: Poetic… Interiors should open new doors, suggest new ways of living, in a dreamy way…

Best Interior Designers: All artists need some inspiration to work, and interior designers are artists too. So, what or who really inspires you?

Jorge Cañete: I often say that I consider myself a mirror. I am here to reflect the emotions of my clients…

PROJECT

Best Interior Designers: How important is a perfect chemistry between you and your clients to achieve the best results?

Jorge Cañete: Confidence. When the client understands that we are not here to impose our own style but to underline its emotions and history, we achieve alchemy.

Best Interior Designers: Choosing the best pieces to compose a project can be the secret to getting the best overall result. Although it seems easy, this is a delicate task and needs full attention on time to execute. Do you have some tips for those who do not know well how to start a challenge like this?

Jorge Cañete: My advice will be: do not invent or pretend to invent, but listen, hear, see… work with all your senses because they capture emotions… Each location tells a story, each client has its story. Write it!

Best Interior Designers: Do you think working with teams in interior design is better or worse than working alone? Why?

Jorge Cañete: Much better to exchange points of view, have a different vision. In a group, we are stronger!

FUTURE

Best Interior Designers: Is there anything exciting that you are working on at the moment that you can tell us about?

Jorge Cañete: I recently opened an art gallery in Switzerland where I invite artists in residency. Artworks are created in situ and exhibited in the gallery. For my, the artistic part is essential in interior design, and working with contemporary artists is a real privilege.

Best Interior Designers: Do you have a favorite project or a favorite story about one of your projects?

Jorge Cañete: I am currently working on a project in the city wherein the blazon appear the symbols of the Sun and the Moon. This has been the starting point of the project, as well as a sentence by Jean Cocteau: “the moon is the sun of the statues”. This project narrates the poetic encounter of the moon and the sun, surrounded by statues…
