The vienna way residence by local practice Marmol Radziner Associates is located on a lush narrow site in venice, california. Due to the slender nature of the plot, the house was divided into thirds with the two main volumes pushed to the opposing property lines bridged by a sunken kitchen and a swimming pool. the single-story southern mass contains more formal living and dining areas that extend out onto an exterior patio. The northern half by contrast is composed of more casual bedrooms, living room, and office in a two-story structure that also contains its own exterior courtyard. the kitchen, enclosed by full-height glass panels on either side connects the two as the anchor, controlling the flow of circulation through it and views at its transverse axis. On the kitchen’s rooftop, a garden continues the dense greenery in the negative spaces of the yard. Extensive glass panels allow the user to live within the sycamore and oak trees and buffalo grass.
