Masquespacio | Exclusive Interview

Masquespacio

Masquespacio is an award-winning creative consultancy created in 2010 by Ana Milena Hernández Palacios and Christophe Penasse. Combining the 2 disciplines of their founders, interior design and marketing, the Spanish design agency creates custom-made branding and interior projects through a unique approach that results in fresh and innovative concepts. We had a special conversation with the design duo and asked them all about the Materia Collection, a special collaboration between Masquespacio and Covet Collection.

ABOUT MASQUESPACIO

Masquespacio | Exclusive Interview

BID: What is your philosophy in life and towards design?

Masquespacio: Since when we started the studio we tried to focus on working on every project with the aim to make things in a different way and enjoy what we developed. We try to enjoy life on a daily basis with a clear focus on enjoying our projects and the experiences we live developing them with our team, collaborators, and learning from the different cultures we work with.

BID: Being in love with our work is always the key to achieving better results. Are you in love with this job? What do you love most about being an interior designer?

Masquespacio: We think that the most beautiful thing on earth is fulfilled with the dreams of our clients and not also this, but being a part of their dreams. It’s a unique opportunity for us to be part of those dreams. On the other side what can be more beautiful than making people that visit or see your design, smile for a moment or create happiness for them when they are living an experience in one of our spaces.

BID: How would you describe your own preferences and style regarding decor? And what does your decorating style say about you?

Masquespacio: We would say that our style speaks completely for us. Although we find a solution for each of our clients based on their business model and requirements, we can tell that our designs always have a highly emotional approach, with a lot of details, but at the same time with a minimal approach to the overall experience. You will always see contrasts of colors, materials, and textures in our designs. It’s a clear representation of Ana’s character full of emotions and contrasts.

BID: How was it like to work with Covet Collection? Would you consider working with them again in the future?

Masquespacio: For us, it was pretty easy to work with Covet Collection. As our styles are not far away from each other the collection was immediately accepted by the Covet team and during the production process their team came up with solutions to make our products technically feasible for commercialization. We can say we would be happy to repeat the collaboration in the future.

BID: What motivated you to move forward with this amazing partnership?

Masquespacio: Previously we collaborated with Covet’s brands Essential Home & Delightfull. Not only we had a great experience working with the team but also got amazed by the craftsmanship applied to the Covet Collections. It is the perfect fit for the development of our unusual designs.

BID: How important is the chemistry between you and your clients to achieve the best results?

Masquespacio: It’s a priority in any project that we work on that both parts are understanding each other and going in the same direction. Without this chemistry, the project never could be a success in our opinion.

MATERIA CAPSULE COLLECTION

BID: Inspiration is something that pushes everyone to create unique things. What was the inspiration for this collection?

Masquespacio: The collection designed for Covet Collection is called Materia and takes inspiration from physical science. We can say that it is made of a furniture and lighting range of products that remind us clearly about forms that float around, but also got stuck together with their different type of substances (materia) and like for nature elements, convert those designs in unusual pieces with contrasting textures, materials and shapes.

BID: What is the message behind this collection?

Masquespacio: We wanted to create a collection that connected with nature in a form that is less conventional than going for organic shapes. For this reason, we choose to work with elements that could be seen as substances and that got connected together to convert them into a furniture piece. It is like walking through a valley and seeing different types of rocks together that create a unique shape, catching your full attention.

BID: Can you tell us what can we expect from this collection?

Masquespacio: We always want to evoke emotion with our designs, but also a sense of curiosity and surprise. It’s like that piece you see in a corner and you start asking questions about. You recognize something in it, you don’t know if you like it or not, but for sure it will make you think and reflect.

BID: In your projects/collections you don’t use any type of fur. Is that just a matter of personal taste or does it have to do with concerns over climate and the environment?

Masquespacio: Although the climate and environmental impact of the chosen material is important for us, we never use it as it is a material that has a lot of protagonism. We prefer to go for a plane option instead of patterns or volume when we choose a fabric. The color is above the main character we are looking for when choosing a fabric.

BID: Sustainability initiatives are becoming extremely popular these days. Designers and homeowners alike have been embracing the eco-friendly trend by using natural materials in their projects and home decor.  Do you think this is the future when it comes to interior design?

Masquespacio: We try to push most of our projects towards handmade and nature-connected materials, although it is not always possible as for some projects we need industrial solutions. Even then we think it is important to try to understand how the material is processed. The production of a material is what can many times make it more or less toxic for the environment and here it is where many industrial solutions take over the eco-friendliness. Another point is that we have always tried to work with local materials, to avoid huge shipping distances which also have a negative impact on the environment. Although definitely the trend of using natural materials is growing fast and we like to name it the ‘new luxury’ in our studio. The question we don’t know how to answer is if it is just a temporary trend or if it would stay with us forever.
