Established only a short while ago in 2012, the style of James Dawson Interiors is bold and dynamic, and pushes the boundaries of contemporary style. In 2014, Dawson was named winner of the Best of State Queensland – Residential Design at the 2014 Australian Interior Design Awards, and received a commendation in the Residential Decoration category for his Marine Parade Apartment. Not afraid of heavier tones, the matt black cabinetry throughout the Marine Parade apartment is anchored by a black and white geometric wallpaper, which is pulled from walls to ceiling in an unregulated pattern, breaking up the strong architectural lines of the apartment.
James Dawson Interiors might be new to the scene, but with a Sydney office recently added to their existing Brisbane Base and awards already under his belt, Dawson’s avant-garde influence is sure to shake up the industry.
James Dawson is a multi award-winning interior designer based in James Street Fortitude Valley, Brisbane. James’ inspired love of Avant-garde details, offset by an Australian simplicity; creates unique, elegant and unexpected interiors for private residences, commercial restaurants, bars and retail stores. James’ reputation in the design industry has seen him many awards including most recently for 2014 winning the Australian Interior Design Award for Best of State Queensland-Residential Design.

Springwood Residance
Situated in a leafy neighbourhood this tired family home underwent a complete Decorative overhaul to reveal its new tailored self. It was an open floor plan so it was important not to over crowd the areas with heavy furniture or accessories but simply define the different spaces when dealing with open plan homes.
Marine Parade Apartment
Avant-garde in design and inspired by all things Parisian the space exudes sophisticated textures and clean-lines. The hand-drawn layout of the black and white wallpaper lifts the spaces and excites with an unexpected twist.
Custom-made black wooden veneer throughout and the large windows allow masses of light to flood into the apartment that were softened with the use of sheer white curtains throughout the apartment.
The decoration of the living area was furnished minimally in soft natural tones allowing the finer details of the wallpapering, polished brass custom designed door handles, island legs and the beautiful Louis Poulsen pendents to remain the focal point of the space.
Black and white is classic, but can be deceivingly tricky to pull off. Because it’s such a timeless combination, the final product can end up confusing and muddled, with a lack of cohesion besides the duo-chromatic color scheme. James Dawson, an emerging Australian designer has created a wonderfully balanced apartment in black, white, and gold for warm accents. The end product is restrained, elegant, and innovative.
The most striking part of this apartment would be the bold ceiling above the kitchen. Besides offering texture, interest, and a graphic element, the design helps separate the kitchen from the living area in the foreground. This distinction is important and helpful for such a small space.
The use of mirrors, above the counters and on the kitchen island help expand the space and, in the kitchen, help to reflect light to lessen the severity of the dark cabinetry.
