The Italian company Kartell is famous around the world for having invented the culture of plastic furniture and interior fittings.
Kartell was founded in 1949 by Giulio Castelli, a chemical engineer with a vision to create something good from plastics, a material whose applications were still relatively unexplored. A fruitful collaboration with the great designer Gino Colombini started, who won the firm its first Compasso d’Oro award in 1955.
Particularly since the plastic-loving era of the 1960s and 70s, Kartell has become an enduring household name; from the famous designs of Anna Castelli Ferrieri and Joe Colombo in the 1960s to more recent hits such as Philippe Starck’s Ghost Chairs or Ron Arad’s Bookworm shelves, Kartell has consistently chosen to work with the world’s most talented designers while reinventing plastic as a quality material for the new age.
Once again on ICFF, Kartell will exhibit on Booth 1448 the freshest novelties. Kartell has collaborated with Swiss bathroom company Laufen to create a new bathroom collection, which they presented in Milan earlier this month.
The bathrooms combine durable, innovative ceramic fixtures with a series of translucent polycarbonate furniture and accessories to create open, flexible spaces designed to work more like living rooms.
Although better known for his music, Kravitz can include designer on his CV, having founded his own studio, Kravitz Design Inc, in 2003. In recent years he’s been involved with multiple large-scale hotel projects, a collaboration with Swarovski and now, is collaborating with none other than famed design personality Philippe Stark on a new rendition of his Mademoiselle chair.
So, if you’re heading to ICFF, on the evening of Monday, May 20th, SoHo’s Greene Street will be the site of a number of exciting design events.
Kartell will present a special display to celebrate the Taschen monograph book “Kartell – The Culture of Plastics” as well as the new Kravitz Design Mademoiselle chairs, now in production. New products will also include the Kartell by Laufen bathroom accessories by Ludovica + Roberto Palomba, recently unveiled at Milan Salone del Mobile 2013.
It’s a must-go!
