This year Maison et Objet’s Designer of the Year was Michael Anastassiades, a top product designer that’s been wowing the world of design with his amazing designs for the past decade! We’ve attended Mr. Anastassiades talk at Maison et Objet and we’ll leave you with some highlights!
With a strong educational background, Anastassiades revealed he soon moved to London with a clear idea of getting some high-end specialization on product design! After graduating and getting some valued experience working with some top designers, Anastassiades launched his amazing lighting brand in 2007, where he first presented his collection at the Maison et Objet. He admits he created this company to have a more secure work situation, but he also wanted to have his own brand so he could create some unique and amazing designs without answering to anyone. The creation of this studio allowed him to dedicate more of his own time to the development and creation of powerful lighting products! In fact, Anastassiade’s love for light started very early in his career, but only when he opened his own company he got the time to really devote himself to the creation of amazing lighting products.
In his work, this amazing Cypriot designer uses simple shapes and volumes – a sphere, a line, a circle – to create a rich language where uncertainty and imbalance are embraced. Even though he works with other design elements, Anastassiades is in his essence a Light Designer and he describes this love as an attraction for the meaning of light and the curiosity for its amazing duality!
His amazing work in his own brand caught the attention of top Italian brand Flos! And by the time he started to collaborate with Flos, he had gained experience and was ready for new challenges. He had unexpected freedom to invent, and could count on the expertise of the company to experiment with technical solutions that up to that moment had not been available to him. He is now one of the main designers of this company, but he keeps working on his own projects for his own company!
Although he is best known for his lighting, Anastassiades has also designed with the same rigor and clarity in all fields. He recently developed furniture pieces for the likes of B&B Italia, Herman Miller or Cassina, and he even tested with Sound when he created speakers for Bang & Olufsen! His work can also be found in permanent collections at the Museum Of Modern Art in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, the MAK in Vienna, the Crafts Council in London and the FRAC Centre in Orleans France.
