RESTAURANT ‘THE JANE’ IN ANTWERP

Michelin-star chef Sergio Herman and chef Nick Bril created their “fine dining meets rock ’n roll” restaurant vision together with Piet Boon over three years ago in a mythical location in Antwerp; the chapel of a former military hospital. Piet Boon Studio, responsible for the interior design and styling of The Jane, since then collaborated in the chapel’s unique transformation into a high-end, contemporary restaurant with international allure where experience is key.

Based on belief in authenticity, functionality and materials that ‘age beautifully’ designers chose to restore only the highly necessary in the chapel and hence preserve the rest. The original ceiling amongst others conveys the pure, understated and respectful environment that serves as the authentic host for the ultimate fine dining experience.

FLOATING HOME

Moored in a beautiful and tranquil spot in a typically Dutch landscape, the houseboat is surrounded by open water on three sides with uninterrupted views to the horizon. The client wanted a minimalist look with a simple ambiance and character, in keeping with the landscape. With that in mind, designers opted for a striking box-shape, finished in black-stained red cedar. Despite strict building regulations dictating its height, they were able to realize two storeys: the bedrooms and basement lie below the waterline.

When the shutters are closed, the exterior of the houseboat functions like a shell-like enclosure. When drawn back and the patio doors opened, a big ‘open living’ feel is created. Finally, the high floor-to-ceiling glass windows – which can be fully opened – create a powerful sense of connection with the natural surroundings.

FIFTH AVENUE APARTMENT

The clients owning this Fifth Avenue apartment stumbled upon the eponymous book of Piet Boon quite by chance. His style perfectly suited the mood they had in mind for their luxury home in the heart of New York City, overlooking the city’s biggest garden: Central Park. After meeting with the clients, Piet Boon presented the first plans for this challenging renovation: owing to strict regulations of the exclusive building, everything had to be completed within four months.

An important consideration was the balance between the various rooms and making optimal use of the natural light, especially in the living spaces which overlooked the park. As the clients already possessed exceptionally good taste, studio consulted with them about their wishes and design tastes. The result is a rich, international style, with elements of European design. And thanks to our subtle use of color, the apartment is an oasis of refined tranquility, exuding an almost meditative, Zen-like atmosphere. The perfect retreat from the City’s hustle and bustle.
