Jeffrey Bilhuber has a uniquely American perspective that breathes new life into traditionalism with a confirmed understanding of modern sensibilities. He mixes periods and design ideas with a confidence and instinctive style whose rules are self-evident: practicality and sheer beauty. Hamish Bowles of Vogue likens him to a 21st century Billy Baldwin. Sara Ruffin Costello of the Wall Street Journal exclaims, ‘With his latest book, Jeffrey Bilhuber has sealed his legacy as a design pioneer on par with phenoms like Albert Hadley.’ Bilhuber’s unque combinations of plain with fancy and new with old make for dwellings as fascinating as they are functional.
He is the author of three highly acclaimed books, all published by Rizzoli. His first book, Jeffrey Bilhuber’s Design Basics, with a foreword by Anna Wintour published by Rizzoli in 2003, is now in its fifth printing. Its follow-up, Defining Luxury: The Qualities of Life at Home, continues a tradition of reaching his broad and diverse market; articulating the mood of a nation, and forecasting the essential goals of the many or few.
In his latest title, The Way Home: Reflections of American Beauty, Bilhuber shares his reflections of personal histories and family life, not grand gestures of presentation. In other words, decorating with soul. Many of Bilhuber’s clients are themselves legendary style setters: Iman and David Bowie, Golden Globe winner Mariska Hargitay, Elsa Peretti, Bob Pittman, and Anna Wintour, to name a few.
His hospitality projects, Ariel Sands in Bermuda for Michael Douglas, City Club Hotel and 70 Park Avenue Hotel in New York City, have been prominently featured in multiple leading design publications. In fact, Bilhuber’s work has been published in more than 200 design books, as well as every major national and international shelter magazine, including prominent features in April 2011 and February 2012 Architectural Digest, where he has always been at the top of the AD100 list.
Jeffrey Bilhuber lives with his family in New York City, as his ancestors have for four generations before him. The first to arrive in this country was Ernest Friedrich, who settled there in 1869. The latest to be welcomed to the Bilhuber family is Johann Christoph, born July 26, 2007. Each generation has added to the narrative that helps create the atmosphere and details in this place they call home. One of a handful of preeminent American decorators, he takes his design cues from understanding the importance of history while optimistically looking toward the future. With almost twenty-five years of decorating experience, he brings an acclaimed confidence and clarity to his far-reaching projects. His interiors consistently address the needs of an evolving and enlightened society with insightfulness and respect.
Bilhuber is happiest doing what he does best—creating environments for real people and families to inhabit. With each project, Bilhuber helps his clients achieve a style to suit their needs, taking their own taste and making it better. He frequents the grand antiquaries, modernist designers’ studios, and artists’ ateliers where these lifestyle needs are best met. Bilhuber’s unlikely combinations of plain with fancy and new with old make for dwellings as fascinating as they are functional.
Bilhuber’s creativity and seemingly inexhaustible supply of energy, combined with an uncanny ability to connect with his clients’ needs, has resulted in an ever-increasing roster of exquisite spaces and ecstatic repeat clientele.
