HOK distinguished at IIDA MADA Awards

The International Interior Design Association’s Mid-America Chapter honored AMC’s new Theatre Support Center in Leawood, Kans., and Polsinelli’s offices in Washington, DC, and Kansas City at the Mid-America Design Awards ceremony.

The biennial MADA event recognizes interior design excellence in the Kansas City and Wichita City areas. Made up of leaders from the architecture and interior design profession, the jury evaluates projects based on innovation, functionality and overall implementation of the design intent and brand.

“The recognition of these projects is a testament to the vision and collaboration of our clients,” said HOK’s Peter Sloan, director of design. “It is a privilege to work with clients like Polsinelli and AMC Theatres that believe in the value of creating an exceptional environment for employees. Their trust in our expertise provides both the framework and freedom to explore new ideas. We are exceedingly proud to be able to create something truly unique and enduring for their people.”

The design of AMC’s new Theatre Support Center in Leawood, Kans., celebrates the company’s role in the entertainment industry and is a catalyst for cultural change. AMC’s vision and brand are reinforced through unique design details including custom carpet patterns derived from three famous movie images, bright pops of AMC’s signature red throughout the space, lighting inspired by old-time movie houses, and environmental graphics that celebrate top-grossing movies and company history. The open, three-story layout and wide variety of collaborative spaces enhance communication across departments.

Polsinelli Washington, DC, Office – Small Corporate “Gold” Award

Since entering the Washington, DC, market in 2005, law firm Polsinelli has achieved steady growth, creating a need for a new space that would increase its visibility and attract talent in a highly competitive market. HOK’s design team worked within the constraints of a highly compressed floor-to-floor height typical in Washington, DC, to create a refined workspace that reflects the firm’s forward-thinking brand. A dual-purpose entry and entertainment space and open circulation system visually expand the space and connect the interior environment to views of an adjacent urban park. Reflective finishes, horizontal textures and a restrained palette reinforce the design concept.

Polsinelli Headquarters – Large Corporate “Silver” Award

Polsinelli-Headquarters

Located within a new signature office building on Kansas City’s Country Club Plaza, Polsinelli’s headquarters provides a world-class environment for its rapidly growing national law practice. The interior environment is timeless and metropolitan, designed to showcase views of the Plaza. The primary architectural element in the space, a seven-story cantilevered stairwell, winds through the center of the building like a sculptural wood ribbon. Although it appears effortless, the structure is a feat of engineering and craftsmanship.
