L.A Studio: Exclusive Interview

 L.A Studio is an award-winning design firm, been listed in AD100 and “Best of Spain” by AD SPAIN. They are specialized in the research of original icon design pieces of the 20th Century and in the past years they have been focusing on browsing and selecting Contemporary pieces with personalities that are in a midway between art and design. In the past days, Best Interior Designers had the opportunity to have an exclusive talk with LA Studio designers and get to know more about their careers and future.

CAREER

Best Interior Designers: How did you get involved in the interior design industry?

L.A STUDIO: L.A STUDIO was established 20 years ago and firstly was focused on antics. We then started having a taste for European and American furniture from the 20th Century.

Best Interior Designers: How would you describe your work style? Do you have any kind of signatures that help to identify your projects?

L.A STUDIO: During our long career we have kept certain tips that specify our style, generating our main autonomy and identity. The heterodoxy where both styles, period,s and different lines combine allows us to have a large range of searching which is very interesting for us. It is also important for us the use color and incorporate contemporary art pieces in the projects we develop, which are signatures that clearly mark the difference between interior design and high-end design.

Best Interior Designers: Being in love with our work is always the key to achieving better results. Are you in love with this job? What do you love most about being an interior designer?

L.A STUDIO: Love and passion are two important elements in our job that allow us to have a searching process that keeps growing at all times in everything that surrounds us. We extend this observance to the interior design field and also to all creative disciplines, that most of the time, we use as inspiration.

Best Interior Designers: What is your philosophy on design and life?

L.A STUDIO: Our philosophy could be summarized as “being children of our times”. Reason why we are always following last trendy creative and artistic innovations that are happening to create our contemporary projects, where personality is a very important milestone.

INSPIRATION

Best Interior Designers: Keeping up to date on all the trends is essential for anyone who wants to conquer this market. In what ways do you keep current with new trends?

L.A STUDIO: The passion that we have for our job makes us have an open mind and keep an eye on everything that surrounds us, as fashion, cinema, theater, opera… and then get it involved in our projects. We combine this with the pieces that we browse during the trips we do around Europe, which makes us realize other realities. Eventually, nowadays we are all following social media which gives us a global vision of trends designs.

Best Interior Designers: Keeping up to date on all the trends is essential for anyone who wants to conquer this market. In what ways do you keep current with new trends?

L.A STUDIO: General speaking, our team is composed of young people, but we keep using paperwork as references and inspiration like AD SPAIN, The Worlds of Interiors, Cabana Magazine, and Frame, among others. We complement this with digital magazines and current media like Instagram, that allows us to have an endless knowledge

 

Best Interior Designers: All artists need some inspiration to work, and interior designers are artists too. So, what or who really inspires you?

L.A STUDIO: We have got multiple inspirations that go from different disciplines. Focusing on the interior design field, we could be between the historicism of Tony Duquette to the contemporary fabulous style of Kelly Wearstler. The art field is another world where we find many of our references. From Jason Rhoades, Mark Queen, Tracey EMin, to Douglas Gordon. Theater and fine arts are other milestones where we could point out creators such as Bob Wilson or Robert Lepage.

Best Interior Designers: If you had to pick one project around the world that you wish it was made by you, which one would it be?

L.A STUDIO: Bearing in mind how difficult would it be to choose just one work of all the projects we have done during our long career, we would like to point out the wonderful job that Gio Ponti did in Venezuela in 1953, with the iconic Villa Planchart. The color that has been used, creativity, the concept, the combination of multiple disciplines and creators and the exquisite art selection, make this work one of our aesthetic and conceptual pillars.

PROJECTS

Best Interior Designers: How important is a perfect chemistry between you and your clients to achieve the best results?

L.A STUDIO: The feeling and respect for our job is a must when we establish a link between the client and us. It is very important to listen to our clients but never obey them. We understand that when a client hires an interior designer who wants to get a better idea of their aesthetic and decorative knowledge. That step of trust is what we require from a client and it is a must to be able to get a perfect balance for the project to get a link between L.A STUDIO’s signature and client’s personality.

Best Interior Designers: Choosing the best pieces to compose a project can be the secret to getting the best overall result. Although it seems easy, this is a delicate task and needs full attention on time to execute. Do you have some tips for those who do not know well how to start a challenge like this?

L.A STUDIO: Usually people work with homogeneity as a lifestyle starting point, creating a “matchy-matchy”, which is always boring and with no interest. Then, when you try to combine different furniture pieces from different periods and styles, which have a huge personality, then the general end result needs to be understood like a coherent concept.

Best Interior Designers: Do you think working with teams in interior design is better or worse than working alone? Why?

L.A STUDIO: I would not personally understand how could work on my own being. From my point of view, it is far too difficult to have knowledge about everything, so the main thing is to recognize your deficiencies and complete them with your team’s best skills.

FUTURE

Best Interior Designers: Do you think working with teams in interior design is better or worse than working alone? Why?

L.A STUDIO: We are currently working on a contract project for a hotel boutique located in Formentera. This is a great goal for the whole team since we have been working so far on residential and urban parameters. So this is a challenge for us since we have to be able to meet our requirements for a new environment and necessities.

Best Interior Designers: What has been your greatest accomplishment as a designer? What goals do you have for the future?

L.A STUDIO: Our biggest goals as a team and as a brand have been to become a reference gallery in Spain. We have been innovative in introducing a style and a selection of furniture that do not leave anyone indifferent. Being able to get people to know about us and about our projects makes us the best example of a good and coherent job. However, generally speaking, we are not to work with melancholy or gloating in the past. Our sight keeps looking forward to the future and where we will be in 3 or 5 years.

 

Best Interior Designers: Do you have a favorite project or a favorite story about one of your projects?

L.A STUDIO: We remember every single project we have done so far is a great positive way since we understand them as an amazing adventure that we have done together. Just to mention one, we remember as a lovely memory the project we did for an Italian couple. We had to build a cozy yet contemporary space at a former Cappuccine Abbey from the 12th Century. This project was a combination of fear and challenge. We ended up being so proud of the end result which marked a before and after in our career.
