HOW IT STARTED
Kelly Wearstler’s debut project in hospitality was back in 1999 when her now-husband Brad Korzen asked the designer to decorate a model room for the Avalon in Beverly Hills. She had already established her own firm in 1995 when this project came along. After creating that “playful take on mid-century modernism“ she then proceeded to continue doing hospitality projects like the Santa Monica Proper.

THE SANTA MONICA PROPER
The Santa Monica Proper, situated in Santa Monica Beach is a 271-room boutique hotel seven blocks away from the beach. The project was named Hotel of the Year at 2020 ahead of America’s hospitality awards, as well as the winner of the Guestrooms and Lobby & Public Spaces categories! The designer wanted the hotel to bring the Californian feel inside, so it is inspired not only by its beautiful landscapes but also by the people. In order to mimic Santa Monica’s beachside identity and to create a sensory experience, organic and textured materials, neutral colors, and vintage furniture were incorporated into the decoration.
One of the main goals was also to bring the outdoors, indoors since that’s very important in Kelly’s opinion and what makes the project unique and personalized. California has a very relaxed and cool ambiance, and that’s exactly what the customers will feel when visiting the hotel.

The 271 rooms are split across two separate wings, one contemporary and the other more retro, set within the original Spanish Mission building.
Details are the most important part when trying to finish a look and provoke a feeling in customers. To truly induce sensation, it is necessary to pay close attention to details. In this case, a lot of textures, warm tones, and green elements were incorporated as California is well known for its palm trees and hot weather.

Santa Monica Proper Hotel by Kelly Wearstler is filled with artworks and furniture pieces created specifically for the property by local artists and artisans.
There was a 1920’s Spanish Colonial Style building, The Santa Monica Building, already there. So, the Santa Monica Proper hotel was built around it, and the designer had to find a way to make them work symbiotically.
