Jayne Design Studio | Elle Decor 2023

Jayne Design Studio has been creating rooms with a deep connection to history and place for the past 30 years. Taking inspiration from the past and looking for nuances that can improve and deepen its decoration. Whether the location is a SoHo loft in a late-19th-century industrial structure or a historic Federal home constructed by a New England whale merchant, the settings become a crucial aspect of the story, with their histories serving as the inspiration for the design.

Thomas Jayne muses, “I have always been drawn to historical themes and artifacts. Their connections and development fascinate me. Finding connections and linkages that add texture, richness, and depth—the components that give a space its spirit and personality—has always been the focus of his work. Although this is the foundation of his concept, it is filtered through an acute awareness of modern expectations: “I like old things, but I want them to look fresh – and that often comes from looking again at the old source and rethinking it in color, shape, and juxtaposition.” In actuality, this entails transforming captivating concepts into individualized, cozy homes or apartments that meet the present requirements of the client, be they young families or seasoned collectors. As a result, the Jayne Design Studio’s motto is “Decoration: Ancient and Modern.”

Jayne’s design philosophy was significantly impacted by his academic background. He completed his studies at the University of Oregon School of Architecture and Allied Arts under the tutelage of renowned architect Marian Card Donnelly. Jayne received his master’s degree from the University of Delaware after receiving training in American decorative arts and material culture at Winterthur! He eventually decided to pursue a profession in interior design as a result of his passion in architecture and ornamental arts. Prior to founding Jayne Design Studio in 1990, he had the good fortune to work for two of the most important design studios in America: Parish-Hadley & Associates and Kevin McNamara, Inc.

Jayne Design Studio has been mentioned in the most recent AD100 list of notable American interior designers and architects as well as the A-List of the best American interior designers published by Elle Decor. As the first interior designer to receive recognition from the ICAA in this category, Thomas Jayne received the Arthur Ross Award for Interior Decoration in 2013. He also won the ICAA’s Stanford White Award in 2014 for his interior decoration of Drumlin Hall in Dutchess County, New York, and again in 2016 for the historical preservation of the interiors of Crichel House in Dorset, England.
