Graduated from the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism of Santos, Sig Bergamin signed residential and commercial projects throughout Brazil and even Europe and the United States, with a style he himself states as a summation of eclecticism, ethnic diversity, humor and versatility. The architect has participated in exhibitions and architecture country’s most important decoration such as Casa Cor, Show houses and Showcases and his work has gained prominence in books, magazines, newspapers, TV and radio programs.
With two offices, one in Sao Paulo and another in New York, Sig Bergamin has been included in the list of 101 top decor in the US, according to House Beautiful magazine. In 1997 he launched the book SIG, in partnership with the photographer Tuca Reinés where gathered his best projects done so far. In 2003, he launched two other nominated books I love it! and I love Brazil, where he gives tips and decoration and has a bit of its history.
Background & Realizations: The projects
The Sig Bergamin architect knew incorporate into the design of your own home all your personal taste and talent for decoration. The residence of the architect in each environment has a style and unique stories, as if it were a show Casa Cor. In all, 500 square meters and four floors full of colors, books, works of art and decorative pieces that Sig brought her countless trips around the world and found for each of them a special place in his retreat in Jardim Paulistano.
Those who see the house from the outside, with brick, white windows, iron gate at the entrance and many plants will probably remember the English townhouses. Upon entering the home, the use of intense colors and many combinations of textures, fabrics and prints immediately draws attention. The living room, called “Chinese”, houses Murano vases of different colors, sofas and cushions upholstered with fun, lots of flowers, orange and yellow curtains and a framed fireplace Moroccan tiles. And, according to him, this was one of the inspirations of the project, which was built to grow vertically, due to the relatively small size of the ground.
The stairway that connects the four floors displays works Sig collects for more than 20 years with big names attached to art. Andy Warhol and Miró, as well as a wide collection of Brazilian modernism, can be enjoyed by guests who are often invited to visit the architect who claims not to worry about matching anything.
The library which houses hundreds of books and magazines Sig also serves as a place for meetings with friends and clients. The mixture of styles is also present in this part of the house: a table of eight seats was covered with ethnic fabrics and green chesterfield sofa French velvet share the same environment, not to mention the pieces acquired during his travels.
To the top floor, pick a cottage theme for decoration. Too demolition wood floor and ceiling and various shades of blue, the room built in the attic reminds old residences, very comfortable. An environment a little more classic, but still very relaxed.
The most iconic project
Casa Amarela, Sao Paulo
Architect and designer Sig Bergamin oversaw the decoration of Casa Amarela, the historic São Paulo house of Vogue Brazil’s Donata Meirelles and her husband, media mogul Nizan Guanaes. Here, an Oscar de la Renta–clad Meirelles stands in the living room with her daughter, fashion designer Helena Bordon, who wears a dress by Valentino and is seated on an Oscar Niemeyer chaise longue.
Photographs by Abelardo Morell (left) and Vik Muniz (far right) are commanding accents in the living room; the sofas are upholstered in a Pierre Frey fabric, the mirrored cocktail table is a Bergamin design, and the gilt-wood stools are 18th-century Italian.
A fringed borne centers the living room, which is arranged into multiple seating areas to accommodate Meirelles and Guanaes’s large-scale entertaining; the curtains are made of a Colefax and Fowler stripe from Cowtan & Tout, a folding screen creates an entry space, and the green Vietnamese garden seat functions as a side table
In a bath, a baroque fabric was used for both the walls and a Roman shade.
The paneled dining room features an heirloom Baccarat chandelier, a large work by Muniz, a 19th-century English table, and Louis XVI–style oval-back chairs made in the 1940s by Jansen.
A Bergamin-designed cocktail table adds a chromatic pop to the skylit library; a screen decorated with exotic birds is positioned behind an antique side table and a Louis XV–style armchair covered in red velvet.
The master bedroom’s wall covering and leather sofa are by Ralph Lauren Home; Bergamin designed the four-poster. A silkscreen by Beatriz Milhazes hangs above the headboard, while a Mario Cravo Neto photograph is displayed between the windows.
