Vervano – Modern Sustainable Furnishing
Vervano was born of a personal need: a source for sustainable furnishings for the studio at Laura Britt Design. A long journey involving extensive research found nothing suitable. So, Laura Britt Design decided to do it! The result is Vervano, an eco-conscious furnishings line based in Austin, Texas, handcrafted in the United States, and fully dedicated to sustainability.
Although ‘green’ is now a standard buzz word it is not a standard practice in the design community. There have been as many challenging days as victorious ones, but in the end they stayed true to their vision: beautiful furniture, built close to home, from sustainably sourced materials.
Laura Britt Design is dedicated to preserving natural resources, maintaining healthy indoor air quality, and reducing the distance the finished products must travel. They build to the highest standards and design for performance in both residential and commercial settings. Laura Britt Design commitment is quality, and the process improvement is key to developing the partnerships they seek; and each Vervano piece reflects that commitment.

Special Project – Gradients of Green
What started as a simple remodeling project has evolved into so much more due to irreconcilable structural challenges (i.e. “bad soils”). A high performance Sustainable Case Study house will soon take the place of the structure built in 1951 in Central Austin.
To spare creating more landfill, this home is being physically moved from Central Austin to its new location, Bertram, TX to house a family of 14.
As a designer, I strive to create functional, beautiful and HEALTHY environments with a mindful approach and sensitivity to clients’ needs.
This project documents the decision making approach – the “Gradients of Green” – that a can be achieved while balancing multiple constraints along the way.
A multitude of decisions must be made throughout the design process, from building orientation and siting to energy sources, to material selections, all the way to the furnishings. With those decisions we have the opportunity to make a significant impact, but they also face the challenge of the higher price tag that can potentially accompany this approach. Fortunately, when it comes to sustainable and green design, it is not an all or nothing approach, rather a spectrum consisting of gradients of green.
