*Pasila Central Tower area, Helsinki, Finland (2009)

Pasila station, a few kilometers from Helsinki center, is located in a privileged high accessibility by rail traffic and rubber, in a few years built a new subway line. Following a principle of great environmental sustainability and reduction of traffic generated by urban sprawl, Helsinki has decided to create a core area of high urban density and highly functional mix (services, trade, offices and housing) close the public transport hub. In 2004, Cino Zucchi Architecture had already drawn up on behalf of the city an overall master plan for the area of the railway station of Pasila given back to the city, based on which in 2006 signed a Memorandum of Understanding between Helsinki and the State Finland (Railway) for the development thereof.

The “fabric of towers” created by the Detailed Plan around an open space of high quality has the distinction of joining in each tower to the function for the lower floors and offices and residential on the upper floors. Both in terms of urban design is that of the buildings, the project addresses the full issue of energy saving and environmental sustainability of the new city, with the contribution of Buro Happold on the latest technical and material on the subject.

The office building U15, located in the northwest quadrant of the new settlement at Assago Milanofiori 2000, is located between the north-south road that separates the linear buildings along the highway from those that surround the new park and the largest block Residential east. The architectural effect generated by this “skin” marked by subtle changes in color from bronze to gold gives the building a strong character “vegetable” trunk or hedge with a strong chiaroscuro in large consistent with the guidelines of the plan. At the attack on the second floor of the building “skin” coating it stops according to a slightly undulating profile, revealing a continuous window below that maximizes the views of the green.

*Lavazza headquarters, Turin, Italy

The project proposal for the new headquarters of CZA Lavazza and for the reform of the former Enel near Largo Brescia shows great attention to the history of the city and the neighborhood, as well as to the history and culture of the company. The large block between via Bologna, Largo Brescia, Palermo and course via Ancona has reformed and opened to the city, keeping the industrial architecture of documentary value. The heart of the project is a new large leafy square in the middle of the block on the axis of via Parma that will link the large building of the former ENEL with the new Lavazza headquarters.

The office building, which communicates with the city through a large glass atrium open on via Bologna and the new square, it takes the form of a great “cloud” linking the various fronts and industrial buildings preserved and converted for new features. The ground floor contains functions in strong relationship with the public, overlooking some “theme gardens” which create a new filter between green building and city. The star schema of the horizontal makes the building a place permeable, with flexible workspaces facing towards the city and the long views of the Mole and the hills. The building is “grafted” on the existing city with great attention. The heights of the buildings and the quality of the facades – characterized by the thick texture of the brise-soleil in stone and metal accents and volume of the “greenhouse” – are carefully studied in relationship with the sun, the quality of open spaces and buildings context.

The project communicates in multiple ways with the Turin tradition without recourse to any copy of the historical forms; references to Turin’s historic and one of its modern masters are interpreted in a contemporary sensibility, attentive to current technologies and the values of life and respect for the environment. The theme of environmental sustainability, on which the Lavazza arises from time great attention throughout the production process and business, becomes one of the strengths of the project.

TOG – ALL CREATORS TOGETHER

The new headquarters of Salewa, one of the most important manufacturing firms in Bolzano, is integrated into the landscape at the point where the city of Bolzano meets the uncontaminated nature of the mountains. As well as housing new work spaces, the building aims to provide a space of interaction and communication between the company and its network of suppliers, partners and clients. The new headquarters represents a point of convergence between different elements of everyday life: from physical, social and communicative dimensions to work styles and leisure.

The Salewa headquarters is formed by a series of multifaceted slabs and towers, including a 50 metre-high structure which when built will be the tallest building in the city. The project combines an electro-coloured micro-perforated aluminium skin which protects the most exposed parts of the building with a large vertical glass covering. The resulting visual effect is that of a rock crystal. The interplay between the thin sheet metal-like pillars and the delicate protective layers frame the façades and underline the contrast between the invisible and visible areas. Situated in a particular geographic location, this complex represents a place of information exchange between the dense web of material and immaterial relations that constitute the life of a modern company. Cino Zucchi collaborated with Park Associati to achieve this architecture project! Two of the biggest Italian architecture, working together for this office/commercial project! How great is this?
